Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

Yesterday our neighbors at 201 West 107th Street suffered a devastating and tragic fire that has instantly and permanently changed their lives. There are 21 apartments in the building, and every resident has lost everything — not only from the fire itself, but from extensive smoke and water damage as well.

What moved me deeply today was how quickly our community responded. Neighbors stepped forward to help at every possible level. That spirit of care and compassion is real — and now we are being asked to extend that support into the coming days, weeks, and months ahead.

Because the tenants have been displaced — now scattered among family, friends, and temporary housing throughout NYC — their individual needs are different and, in many cases, still unknown. For that reason, we are organizing a direct financial response so that each family can determine for themselves what they most urgently need to begin rebuilding their lives.

Our goal is to raise $21,000, which will allow us to give each of the 21 households a gift of $1,000 as a first step of care and solidarity.

Please bring donations by Saturday afternoon so that the gifts can be distributed promptly.

This Sunday, December 14, 2025 at 3:00 PM, Ascension Church will host and dedicate a free Christmas concert in honor of the tenants of 201 West 107th Street, beautifully sung by the Ascension Choir. A collection will be taken, and the funds raised will be distributed individually to the displaced tenants immediately following the concert.

I invite you to join us as a community through your monetary generosity, your presence at the concert, or your prayers for our neighbors who have been so deeply impacted, especially during this holy season.

Ayer, nuestros vecinos en 201 West 107th Street sufrieron un incendio devastador y trágico que ha cambiado sus vidas de manera instantánea y permanente. Hay 21 apartamentos en el edificio, y cada residente lo ha perdido todo — no solo por el fuego, sino también por los extensos daños causados por el humo y el agua.

Lo que me conmovió profundamente hoy fue la rapidez con la que nuestra comunidad respondió. Los vecinos dieron un paso al frente para ayudar en todos los niveles posibles. Ese espíritu de cuidado y compasión es real — y ahora se nos pide extender ese apoyo durante los próximos días, semanas y meses.

Debido a que los inquilinos han sido desplazados — ahora dispersos entre familiares, amigos y alojamientos temporales por toda la ciudad de Nueva York — sus necesidades individuales son diferentes y, en muchos casos, aún desconocidas. Por esa razón, estamos organizando una respuesta financiera directa para que cada familia pueda determinar por sí misma lo que más necesita urgentemente para comenzar a reconstruir sus vidas.
